Laser Eye Center, a Southern California-based network of LASIK vision correction surgery centers that treat various eye conditions, announced that it is taking up the cause to stop diabetes by emphasizing the signs of diabetes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle with the right food and exercise, and regularly visiting physicians and eye specialists.

Laser Eye Center recommends that those with diabetes or those at risk get their eyes examined at least once a year. Diabetes can affect the blood vessels within the eyes, leading to a retina disorder known as diabetic retinopathy. For some people with diabetes, this could even lead to blindness, if left untreated. Factors depend on genetics, how well blood sugar levels are controlled, the amount of time a person has been a diabetic and blood pressure levels.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can minimize the effects of diabetes and ensure other eye disorders do not impact eye health. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) noted that, "people with diabetes are 40% more likely to suffer from glaucoma." Additionally, while many people develop cataracts, those with diabetes are 60% more likely to develop this eye condition.
